What Exactly is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of the compounds found in the cannabis plant, specifically the variety known as hemp. Keep in mind, cannabis has been used in medicine across many cultures for thousands of years. However, over the last few decades, CBD has been a target for numerous scientific studies designed to understand the role that CBD plays in regulating several key processes in the body. More recently, pharmaceutical drugs based on CBD have been approved for use by the FDA to treat specific conditions such as seizures for rare forms of epilepsy.
Is CBD the Same as Medical Marijuana?
No. And this really is an important difference. Cannabis is grown in a wide variety of strains that are selectively bred for different purposes. Varieties that are developed for medical or recreational use typically have very high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Among the roughly 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis, THC is the one that is associated with the “high” that users feel. CBD oil, also known as CBD hemp oil, is derived from a strain of cannabis known as hemp which is defined by law to contain less than .3% THC. Products refined from hemp do not cause an intoxicated effect nor do they pose any toxicity risk for our pets.
How Does CBD Work?
The body (people and most mammals) has what is known as an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that was discovered by scientists in the 1980’s. In the years to follow researchers have discovered that the ECS is responsible for a great deal of regulation in the central and peripheral nervous systems and immune system. The ECS also plays a role in maintaining healthy skin by regulating the production of important lipids. The ECS is comprised of a series of receptors in the body that respond to both endocannabinoids (cannabinoids that your own body produces) as well as cannabinoids that have been introduced to the body through products such as CBD oil.
