Cats Have an Endocannabinoid System Too
CBD and other cannabinoids work by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) β a signaling network that regulates inflammation, pain, mood, and homeostasis. Like dogs and humans, cats possess CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors throughout their nervous system and tissues, and the ECS is recognized as a conserved system across all mammals.

Feline-Specific Safety Research
A 2024 peer-reviewed study from the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute β randomized, blinded, and placebo-controlled β found that healthy cats tolerated daily CBD supplementation well. This is one of the first long-term feline-specific studies, filling a meaningful gap in the literature.

Emerging Evidence for Feline Mood & Comfort
A 2025 study found CBD may reduce stress behaviors in cats during fear-triggering events like thunderstorms. A separate case report documented significant pain score reductions in a cat with chronic osteoarthritic pain after 30 days of CBD treatment. Cat owners also widely report calming and comfort benefits β consistent with mechanism-based expectations from the shared ECS.

What is CBD and how is it used for cats?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound that grows naturally in hemp. Many cat owners use CBD oil to help support their cats' calm disposition, normal mobility, and overall wellness.
CBD oil may be used as a method of daily support, while topical CBD may be used to help support normal skin health and comfort.
Is CBD safe for cats?
CBD products made specifically for cats are generally well-tolerated. It's important to find a reputable manufacturer that uses high quality ingredients and third-party lab tests their products.
An examination from a veterinarian is recommended prior to using this product, especially if your cat is on any medications or has pre-existing conditions.
Can cats have too much CBD?
High dosages of CBD could cause your cat to become drowsy or sleepy for a period of time (usually no more than a couple of hours).
That said, this is only associated with doses higher than what is recommended for their weight. Always follow the suggested serving guidelines on the label.
Can CBD interact with my cat's medication?
CBD can interact with medications processed by a liver enzyme group known as CYP450. This doesn't mean your cat can't use CBD β it just means it's wise to speak with your veterinarian, especially if they're on prescription medications that influence this enzyme group.
