A Beginner's Guide to Beagles

We’ll explore the fundamentals of Beagles in this article. They’re wonderful dogs, and it’s important to know how to properly care for them if you bring one home.

Beagles are a popular, family-friendly dog breed, and for good reason! These small to medium-sized pups are described by the breed standard as being “big for their inches." They are loyal, loving hounds with traditionally good temperaments and sweet personalities.

We’ll explore the fundamentals of Beagles in this article. They’re wonderful dogs, and it’s important to know how to properly care for them if you bring one home.

Let’s get started!

Beagle Breed Details: Size, Color, Tail

The American Kennel Club breed standard describes the Beagle breed as having a “houndlike expression, gentle and pleading” and there’s certainly no way you’ll be able to overlook a Beagle’s soft brown eyes.

How Big Are Beagles?

The Beagle comes in two varieties: the 13-inch variety (up to 13 inches tall) and the 15-inch variety (over 13 but not exceeding 15 inches). Height is the key difference between them.

The 13-inch Beagle generally weighs 20–30 pounds, while a 15-inch Beagle may weigh up to 35 pounds. Females tend to weigh slightly less.

Beagle Colors

Beagles come in many “true hound colors,” including black, white, lemon, red, chocolate, and various tricolor combinations. White markings are very common.

Tail Characteristics

A white-tipped tail is common and helps hunters spot the dog, but it’s not required. The important characteristic is a “gaily carried” tail—held upright and happy-looking.

Beagle Characteristics: Personality

Beagles are known for being “merry,” friendly, and gentle. Because they were bred to hunt in packs, they usually do well with other dogs.

Good socialization and positive reinforcement training from puppyhood are essential for a well-adjusted Beagle.

Beagle Grooming

Beagles have a short, medium-length coat that sheds year-round, especially during seasonal changes. Grooming during heavy-shedding periods helps manage loose hair.

Because of their floppy ears, they may be prone to ear infections. Routine ear cleaning is recommended.

Beagle Training and Exercise

Beagles are energetic hunting dogs that require at least one hour of daily exercise and mental stimulation.

They must be kept on a leash or in a fenced area due to their strong scent-driven instincts—they may wander off following smells!

Their strong food motivation makes them excellent candidates for positive reinforcement training.

Beagle Health

Beagles typically live 10–15 years. Routine veterinary care, vaccinations, and maintaining a lean weight are essential.

They may be predisposed to certain conditions like hypothyroidism, IVDD, and epilepsy.

Choosing a Beagle Breeder

Choose breeders who follow OFA-CHIC health screening recommendations. These include hip evaluations, eye exams, thyroid testing, and optional genetic testing.

A reputable breeder should provide veterinary records and allow you to visit their facility.

Bringing a Beagle Into Your Family

Beagles are active, outgoing, and affectionate, but they require exercise, training, and secure outdoor environments.

Their baying and howling may be a deal-breaker for some families, but for many, their friendly temperament makes them wonderful companions.
