Many of the CBD products that are flooding the shelves of big box pet stores these days are based on isolated CBD. These brands will often use marketing such as “THC free” in order to present their products as best for pets. However, CBD isolate is not a sign of quality, nor is it better for pets.
First, let’s just be clear. Although full spectrum CBD products can contain trace amounts of THC in them (less than 0.3% by law), research has shown it is safe for dogs.
CBD isolate is made from hemp using a variety of chemical and mechanical means to strip away all other compounds found in both the source hemp as well as any pesticides or other harmful residues from industrial farming practices. Right now the CBD market is flooded with hemp products made from cheap hemp sourced from China. Estimates suggest that as much as 70% of the hemp products in the U.S. are made with hemp that comes from China. And, there is a real problem with that.
The hemp plant is known to be a bioaccumulator. That means it sucks up and concentrates the heavy metals and other worrying chemicals found in commercial agriculture, particularly in China where hemp is often grown as a cover crop to deliberately cleanse these harmful chemicals out of fields that are actually designed to grow other crops.
In fact, one study did some testing of hemp products in the U.S. markets and found some alarming results: “After thousands of tests, 70 percent of products were found "highly contaminated" with heavy metals like lead and arsenic, herbicides like glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) and a host of other contaminants including pesticides, BPA and toxic mold.”
